Why Care?

Eating Disorders Can

Harm Anyone

  • People of all races, gender, sizes, ages, and identities suffer from eating disorders

  • Those from lower socioeconomic status and people of color are at a higher risk for going undiagnosed 

  • Females are 2x as likely as males to have an eating disorder

EDs are Dangerous

and Complex

  • 9% of Wisconsinites will experience an eating disorder in their lifetime

  • Eating disorders have the second highest mortality rate of any mental illness

  • Eating Disorders may lead to other harmful behaviors such as suicidal ideation, developmental impairment, social/work/school issues, and a 30-50% chance of relapse

Educational Opportunities are Scarce

  • Colleges and universities across the United States have insufficient opportunities for students desiring to specialize in the treatment of eating disorders

  • Limited clinical internship opportunities in eating disorder treatment

Wisconsin Has a Low Capacity for Care

  • Wisconsin has only 2 dedicated eating disorder inpatient care facilities YET

    • 950+ emergency room visits, 410+ inpatient hospitalizations, and $81.7 M loss to health system each year​

  • Eating Disorders are the least covered psychiatric condition in the American managed care system
